Signal Theory finds applications in different fields of Engineering. In particular, many results were developed within the theory of Communication Engineering, where advanced processing is needed to transmit properly a signal and to decode the information contained in a received signal, which is usually corrupted by noise. Signals recorded with different instruments and properly sampled can provide important indications on an electronic, mechanical or biological system and they can allow studying or controlling it. Signal Theory is also useful in studying modes of mechanical vibration of buildings or vehicles, which are important for test and assessment purposes. Often, the development of new technologies requires the joint effort of different engineers. Thus, it is important that such different professionals have equivalent competences and a common language when they extract information from signals measured from the system they are designing or testing. This text provides a short, but rigorous introduction to Signal Theory, stressing the technique of Fourier transform, which represents the key to understanding many different phenomena. Many applications are discussed (e.g. electrical, mechanical, sound propagation, heat transfer problems), which allow understanding that Signal Theory can be considered as a tool to face different Engineering problems. Moreover, some exercises are carried out to help the reader to acquire the most important signal processing techniques. |
